About This Wine

Created as a tribute to Pierluigi Talenti, Piero comes from a tiny 1.95-hectare slope just a short walk from the cellar, at 410 meters with a south–southeast tilt. Clay and galestro marl, a personal clonal selection begun in the 1970s, and a strict parcel-by-parcel harvest set the tone. Fermentation is clean and cool in steel, then a patient 24 months in 500-liter French tonneaux before a calm spell in bottle—precision winemaking that lets the site do the talking. The 2020 pours vivid ruby and opens with a mineral breeze—iodine, sea salt, cold stone—before rising into black cherry, blackberry, and wild herbs, with threads of cocoa, tobacco, and orange zest. Silky and vibrant, it glides on polished tannins and a long, savory finish. It also earned the highest score in our sample blind tastings (9.2/10), a neat confirmation of what the glass already suggests: power without weight, clarity without sharp edges, and the kind of poise that makes another sip feel inevitable.

About Talenti

Talenti stands on the southern slopes of Montalcino near Sant’Angelo in Colle, a patchwork of vineyards that reads like a map of Sangiovese nuance. Eleven parcels climb and turn with altitude, exposure, and soils, giving Riccardo Talenti a wide palette of tones to draw from. Hand harvesting, small bins, and rigorous berry selection keep the fruit pristine, while long, unhurried élevage preserves the vineyard voice. The result is Brunello that speaks softly but with striking clarity—a delicate, terroir-first style defined by tension, fine tannins, and purity of fruit. The story began with Pierluigi Talenti, who arrived from Romagna in the 1950s, managed Il Poggione, and transformed Pian di Conte into a serious cellar while studying Sangiovese Grosso in depth. His work set the template: vines planted in prime sites, a thoughtful mix of Allier and Slavonian oak, and a relentless focus on balance over brawn. When Pierluigi passed in 1999, his grandson Riccardo took the helm at just twenty, modernizing with a light touch and keeping tradition front and center. Today he also serves on the Consorzio’s governing board, part of a fresh, dynamic wave shaping Montalcino’s future. Quality at Talenti is felt in the glass before it’s read on a label: Brunello that opens with red cherry, rose, and blood orange, then glides into savory herbs, tea leaf, and a saline snap. Structure is refined, the oak is a frame rather than a headline, and time in bottle adds polish without dulling the vineyard’s edges. The Rosso di Montalcino mirrors that philosophy in a brighter register—vivid fruit, firm yet appetizing tannins, and real lift. Across the range, the house signature is consistency without sameness: wines that privilege place, precision, and drinkability.
