About This Wine
Champagne Jean Lallement, long celebrated for its powerful Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzenay, has unveiled a striking new expression: Brut Meunier. This cuvée marks an exciting evolution for the domaine, showcasing Pinot Meunier in pure form for the first time. Traditionally a supporting grape in blends, Meunier here takes center stage, revealing its vibrant personality and ability to bring generosity, juiciness, and aromatic lift. With the Lallement family’s meticulous approach—hand harvesting, native yeasts, and precise vinification—the result is a wine that remains true to the domaine’s reputation for depth and intensity, while adding a new layer of charm and approachability. Brut Meunier captures the variety’s supple fruit, floral notes, and silken texture, yet it is anything but simple. Thanks to the Lallement philosophy of incorporating reserve wines and careful élevage, including the influence of oak aging, the cuvée achieves remarkable complexity and balance. It stands as both a fresh departure and a natural extension of the house style: expressive, terroir-driven, and crafted in tiny quantities. For those who know Jean Lallement as a hidden gem of Verzenay Pinot Noir, Brut Meunier offers an equally compelling glimpse into the untapped potential of this once-overlooked grape.
About Champagne Jean Lallement
Among the many great houses of the Montagne de Reims, Champagne Jean Lallement & Fils remains one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Producing no more than 20,000 bottles per year from just 4.5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay and Verzy, this is a true family domaine whose wines rival the giants of Champagne in both depth and distinction. The Lallement family has cultivated vines in Verzenay since the 17th century, and the domaine began bottling under its own name in 1929. Today, Jean-Luc and Alexandra Lallement carry forward this legacy with remarkable precision and care. The estate’s vineyards, spread across more than 20 small plots, are planted predominantly to Pinot Noir on chalk-rich soils, with an average vine age of around 30 years. Harvesting is always done by hand, and each parcel is vinified separately with native yeasts, preserving the character of terroir. A defining feature of Jean Lallement’s style is the extensive use of reserve wines—many of which are aged in oak barrels, a technique famously employed by Krug. This brings layers of complexity, texture, and intensity to the cuvées, elevating them far beyond what one might expect from such a small grower. The flagship Jean Lallement Brut encapsulates the power and finesse of Verzenay’s Grand Cru Pinot Noir: bold, structured, and intensely flavorful, yet finely balanced with elegance and minerality. With a modest dosage of 3–8 g/l, the wines retain purity and precision while gaining depth from years of patient élevage. Despite its small scale, Champagne Jean Lallement stands as a Goliath in quality—proof that artisanal, family-made wines can rival and even surpass the region’s most celebrated names. For those who discover it, this domaine is not just a hidden gem, but a revelation.
