About This Wine
Champagne Fleury’s Variation 2018 Brut Nature is a true rarity in the Champagne landscape—a 100% Pinot Gris cuvée, produced biodynamically and without sulfur addition. Pinot Gris is almost unheard of in Champagne, and Fleury, long a pioneer of biodynamics in the region, planted the variety in 2010 with the vision of exploring its singular voice. Harvested in 2018, a warm and generous vintage, the grapes reached beautiful maturity and were vinified with no sulfur until 2019, before being aged patiently for five years in the Fleury cellars. With only 2,200 bottles produced, this third edition of Variation stands as both an innovation and a tribute to tradition, proving how even forgotten cépages can express the Côte des Bar’s terroir with brilliance. The wine is vinified in cuve and undergoes full malolactic fermentation, released as Brut Nature (0 g/l dosage) to preserve purity and precision. The nose is powerful and complex, marked by original aromas of ripe yellow fruit, exotic mango and papaya, and a touch of almond. On the palate, the attack is frank and precise, carrying the same aromatic promise into a mouthfeel that is both generous and finely textured. The finish is delicate, persistent, and distinctly mineral, lingering with quiet elegance.
About Champagne Fleury
Champagne Fleury stands as a true pioneer in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost part of the Champagne region. Established in 1895 in the village of Courteron, the estate has remained family-run for over four generations, continually blending tradition with innovation. In 1989, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fleury, the domaine became the first Champagne house to adopt biodynamic viticulture, fully committing to the practice by 1992. This courageous step not only marked a turning point for the family estate but also set a historic precedent for Champagne, inspiring many others to rethink their relationship with the land. With 15 hectares of vineyards rooted in the clay-limestone soils of the Kimmeridgian period, Fleury’s plantings are dominated by Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Meunier. These vines are cultivated according to the rhythms of nature and the cosmic calendar, a reflection of the estate’s deep respect for ecological balance and the interconnectedness of sky and earth. The resulting Champagnes are expressive, pure, and terroir-driven—wines that combine generosity of fruit with elegance, minerality, and vitality. Today, Champagne Fleury remains not only a benchmark grower in the region but also a symbol of how biodynamic principles can harmonize with the age-old traditions of Champagne, creating wines of both authenticity and soul.
