About This Wine
Champagne Fleury’s Sonate Extra Brut 2013 is both a technical feat and a poetic expression of the Côte des Bar’s terroir. Sourced from old Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vines averaging 35 years of age, the fruit comes from prized parcels—Les Mouillères, Charme de Fin, and Côte de Champraux—where clay-limestone soils imbue the wines with depth and vitality. The 2013 vintage, marked by slow ripening and excellent sanitary conditions, offered fruit of remarkable aromatic purity, making it ideal for Fleury’s bold approach: a vinification carried out entirely without added sulfur. This philosophy, embraced since 2009, highlights the unadorned voice of the terroir, with biodynamic viticulture ensuring a deep harmony between vineyard and environment. The winemaking blends precision and patience: 92% Pinot Noir for structure and red-fruited generosity, with 8% Pinot Blanc lending lift and nuance. Fermented and aged in stainless steel and oak before long lees aging, this extra brut (0 g/l dosage) champagne carries both gravity and grace. In the glass, its bright golden hue and fine, ethereal mousse introduce a wine of quiet intensity. Aromas of orchard apple, baked tart, grapefruit jelly, and stewed pineapple give way to blood orange, redcurrant, and toasted hazelnut. The palate is broad yet airy, with ripe citrus depth, gentle pastry notes, and a touch of minerality, all culminating in a finish that is extraordinarily long, saline, and precise.
About Champagne Fleury
Champagne Fleury stands as a true pioneer in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost part of the Champagne region. Established in 1895 in the village of Courteron, the estate has remained family-run for over four generations, continually blending tradition with innovation. In 1989, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fleury, the domaine became the first Champagne house to adopt biodynamic viticulture, fully committing to the practice by 1992. This courageous step not only marked a turning point for the family estate but also set a historic precedent for Champagne, inspiring many others to rethink their relationship with the land. With 15 hectares of vineyards rooted in the clay-limestone soils of the Kimmeridgian period, Fleury’s plantings are dominated by Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Meunier. These vines are cultivated according to the rhythms of nature and the cosmic calendar, a reflection of the estate’s deep respect for ecological balance and the interconnectedness of sky and earth. The resulting Champagnes are expressive, pure, and terroir-driven—wines that combine generosity of fruit with elegance, minerality, and vitality. Today, Champagne Fleury remains not only a benchmark grower in the region but also a symbol of how biodynamic principles can harmonize with the age-old traditions of Champagne, creating wines of both authenticity and soul.
