About This Wine

Barbaresco Nervo 2021 comes from one of Treiso’s most dramatic sites, where steep, sun-drenched slopes demand hard work but reward with depth and finesse. The Nervo cru, bordering Bernardot and the family’s home Rizzi vineyard, is marked by white marl and clay-limestone soils threaded with sand. At 310–370 meters altitude, its exposure and drainage create an ideal balance of ripeness and freshness. Here Nebbiolo shows a more vertical, mineral-driven personality, carrying both elegance and intensity in equal measure. In the glass, the 2021 release is taut and finely etched, opening with red berries, forest fruits and floral notes before layering in spice, leather, and a touch of earth. The palate is precise, with sleek tannins and a long mineral finish that slowly reveals raspberry, cinnamon, and mint. It’s a wine of lift and line, less about power than refinement, with the capacity to age gracefully while offering charm in youth. This is the gentler yet deeply expressive soul of Barbaresco, a cru bottling that speaks clearly of place.

About Cantina Rizzi

Cantina Rizzi is a Barbaresco specialist rooted in Treiso, where the Dellapiana family farms some of the appellation’s most prized hillsides. The estate’s holdings sweep across the crus of Rizzi (with the prized Vigna Boito), Nervo and Pajorè, plus parcels in Manzola, Giacone and Bricco di Neive. Altitudes from roughly 200 to 430 meters, white sandy marls, and sun-catching exposures shape Nebbiolo that is refined yet powerful—wine that speaks clearly of place. It’s no surprise Kerin O’Keefe hails Rizzi as “one of the top rising stars of the entire Barbaresco denomination.” In the winery, tradition guides the hand and precision sets the tone. Fruit sees a thoughtful, extended maceration, fermentations are in stainless steel, and maturation is in large Slavonian botti with time in cement—choices that keep wood in the background and let the crus lead. The single-site Barbarescos are the calling card: Rizzi for silken charm and breadth, Nervo for mineral drive and lift, Pajorè for depth and layering, and the longer-aged Riserva Vigna Boito for stature and longevity. The style is clean, transparent and texturally fine, built to drink beautifully young while rewarding cellaring. Quality here starts in the rows. Rizzi farms sustainably under The Green Experience, favors compost and green manures over chemicals, and has harnessed solar power since 2006. Low-intervention cellar work mirrors this vineyard care, aiming for clarity rather than gloss. The result is a range defined by territorial precision and poise—Barbarescos with vivid aromatics, pure red fruit, and finely meshed tannins—wines that continue to raise the bar in the Langhe while remaining compelling in value.
